In the western Pacific, an earthquake of magnitude 7.6 occurred. This was announced by the Geological Institute of the U.S. monitoring (USGS) with on Saturday.
After the earthquake near the island nation of Vanuatu on Sunday (local time) a tsunami warning for Vanuatu, Fiji and New Caledonia has been issued.
On 26 December 2004, a quake off Sumatra triggered a tsunami that claimed some 230,000 lives. (Afp / fr)
